What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from ongoing distress due to disturbing life events. EMDR is an evidence-based modality that supports the brain’s natural ability to move towards healing and adaptive resolution of adverse experiences.

What are the benefits of Intensive EMDR?

EMDR Intensives are personalized to address your unique therapy goals in a condensed time frame thus enabling you to make progress towards healing past wounds on an accelerated schedule. Unlike traditional weekly sessions, EMDR intensives provide a dedicated time to focus deeply on processing distressing memories, thoughts, and emotions. This condensed timeline often leads to more rapid symptom reduction and resolution of troubling material.

How does it work?

When a person encounters a traumatic event, the brain may become overwhelmed and unable to naturally process information. As a result, the distressing experience may become “stuck” in the mind, leading to recurring flashbacks, anxiety, nightmares, and other unwanted physical and emotional reactions. EMDR is utilized to assist the brain in reprocessing distressing memories by using bilateral stimulation, typically in the form of eye movements, hand taps, or sounds, to activate both hemispheres of the brain. This bilateral stimulation enables the brain to unfreeze the traumatic memories and store them as it would a normal memory. People report significant shifts in images, feelings, and beliefs about past troubling events.

An EMDR therapist will work with you through the eight phases of EMDR therapy, including:

  • History and Planning – information about your past and current challenges to establish a treatment plan aligned with your goals
  • Preparation – therapist and client work together to identify and enhance coping strategies to manage emotional distress that may arise
  • Assessment – your clinician will help to identify the memories to focus on including images, positive and negative beliefs, emotions and body sensations
  • Desensitization – The therapist helps you reprocess “stuck” memories by using bilateral stimulation
  • Installation – Positive beliefs are strengthened to replace negative beliefs associated with past memories
  • Body Scan – Elimination of residual tension or emotional responses tied to the memories
  • Closure – Your therapist works to ensure that you leave feeling emotionally stable and supported
  • Reevaluation – Following reprocessing, the therapist reassesses your progress and discusses future steps.

How much does it cost?

EMDR Intensives are not covered by insurance at this time and self-pay rates are $250 per hour which equates to $1500 for a 6 hour session. We collect half of the fees up front and then will collect the remainder at the intake appointment.

How do I get started?

A 30 minute screening call is completed with our clinicians to determine if Intensive EMDR services are appropriate for the challenges you are facing. This is the time to ask questions about the process and to explore any concerns you have. Once the screening has been completed and the clinician determines appropriateness of this treatment you will be forwarded to our scheduling department to book your appointment.
